WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY? Psychologists and other academics have been writing about psychological safety since the mid-1960s. However, the concept was brought to most people s attention through Amy Edmondson s 2019 book The Fearless Organization. In her book, Edmondson (the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School) shares insights based on almost 30 years of research, supported and reinforced by an extensive five-year research program with 15,000 employees by Google: Project Aristotle. Project Aristotle researched why some teams fail and some teams thrive. One of their key findings, having studied 180 teams at Google, was that psychological safety was by far the most important dynamic when it came to explaining what made the best or most successful teams.
