What is influencing? Influencing is a process that aims to alter someone s perception, beliefs, decisions or actions to effect a change. Think about how often - in your current role - you need to influence others. Chances are you use influence skills every day - in working with your team, manager, colleagues, and other stakeholders up, down, and across the organization.

You may, for example, need to gain support, inspire others, persuade someone to be your champion, spark interest in a new idea, or build new relationships.

Whatever form influencing takes in your current role, doing it with confidence and skill makes your job all that much easier.

The key to good decision making is not knowledge. It is

understanding. We are swimming in the former. We are

desperately lacking in the latter.

Malcolm Gladwell, Blink

Influencing is not coercion, manipulation, making threats, bullying, or trickery.

Influencing is a positive skill and is often unconscious.

You influence people by virtue of who you are and what you do:

how you present yourself, how you communicate and how you treat people.
