Amétyst, the Montpellier Urban Community s household waste and biowaste methanation unit, which has been operated by SUEZ since the end of 2014, uses a renewable energy production unit and a revolutionary material recovery unit which triples waste recovery.

Amétyst simultaneously produces electricity and heat from the biogas from waste. The electricity and heat supply a 1,500-household eco-district hosting numerous activities (shops, schools, etc.) and one of the largest clinics in Montpellier.

At the same time, the unit also produces 33,000 tonnes of top- quality compost for agriculture per year.

A research laboratory dedicated to the recovery of organic waste has been set up in partnership with the INRA (the French agronomic research institute) in Narbonne in support of the development of this activity in the region.
