the Marjal Park in Alicante: a tool for urban resilience

The La Marjal Park in Alicante, which was designed and is managed by Aguas de Alicante (AMAEM), a public-private partnership between SUEZ and the town authorities, can store 45,000 m3 of rainwater, making it the largest floodable urban park in Europe. The main purpose of the park is to prevent the floods that occur in the coastal zones of the town with increasing frequency.

During periods of heavy rainfall, the water is stored in the park, then conveyed to the wastewater treatment plant, and reused, mainly for irrigation.

As well as offering protection against flooding, the site has also become a new green area that is open to the townspeople and contributes to the conservation of biodiversity by hosting a wealth of birdlife.
