a business alliance to reduce the carbon footprint of desalination plants
Seawater desalination is a solution for numerous regions of the world exposed to water stress. In an effort to overcome the obstacles to the development of this technique, the Global H2O minus CO2 Desalination Alliance was set up at the COP21, and has been recognised as part of the United Nations Global Climate Action Agenda. SUEZ is one of the partners of this initiative, which brings together organisations from 23 countries and aims to encourage more environmentally-friendly solutions that reduce the CO2 emissions from desalination plants.
Four main actions have been recommended: clean energy supplies for new plants, the replacement of fossil fuel energy sources of existing plants with clean energy sources, the modernisation of existing plants by introducing more ecological energy technologies, and attracting investment in water desalination in order to reduce CO2 emissions.
