wastewater treatment working for agriculture in Morocco

The Médiouna wastewater treatment plant, which came onstream in 2013 and is operated by Lydec, is the first plant in North Africa to combine the activated sludge process and membrane technology.

Each year, the plant treats more than 690,000 m3 of water, which is then transported to Oued Hassar for use in agriculture. In March 2017, the Lydec Foundation inaugurated an urban agricultural pilot measuring almost 1,600 m2 around the station in order to demonstrate the feasibility of reusing the treated water. The seven cultivation zones (vegetable garden, fruit trees, herbs, etc.), plus a plant nursery and a composting area, are irrigated using the treated wastewater.

This major project is part of Lydec s initiative to co-build innovative solutions for the climate with the stakeholders.

Agriculture is Morocco s largest consumer of water,

representing more than 80% water consumption. Due to climate change, the water requirements of irrigated crops could rise by between 7% and 12% by 2030.
